"“We haven’t forgotten what happened in Sandy Hook and Columbine and Virginia Tech. Those things happened a long time ago, and people tried putting them in the back of their minds, but we’re showing here that we haven’t forgotten about any of that,” said Ruqaiyah.
The shooting that first affected her directly was Sandy Hook, she said. “I was very young,” she said. “I was nervous, I didn’t really understand what it was about. I remember being afraid.”
For Amanah, it was “when it happened here”. There was a school shooting nearby in Marylandlast week.
The father and daughter came to Washington to show their support for the Parkland students, and to advocate for a ban on assault weapons.
“I think the second amendment needs to be repealed and amended. I don’t think the right to own a gun should be unlimited,” Steve Craig said.
Maddie Craig said she thought social media had changed the gun control debate, allowing students to speak directly to each other and share their experiences. “For Columbine, there wasn’t that social media presence.” Now, she said, “you can hear every student’s opinion. There’s a lot more awareness of what’s going on across America.” "
"This week’s Project Runway All Stars featured resort wear. As everyone thinks about a relaxing vacation, resort wear has a luxurious ease. Whether someone goes to the beach, mountains or a safari, the clothes need to impress. While a fashionable person wants a good design, they don’t want to wear overly fussy clothes while on vacation.
Since the resort is as much a state of mind as it is a location, the look needs to convey that resort ease. Ease doesn’t mean frumpy nor does it mean a huge tent. Throw into the mix the Candy Crush lands as inspiration, and the designers could be crushed by the judges’ critiques.
Even before the resort wear looks hit the runway, the designers’ looks had a lot of similarities. Three designers had pants paired with a flowy top or dress. While these designers tried to impress with carefully tailored pants, the similarities created instant comparisons.
Anthony’s look was inspired by a safari. While safari clothes are often muted khaki or neutrals, we have to remember, this challenge was inspired by Candy Crush. His all-white look had no color but still referenced the game through the eyelet fabric. He took a risk, but it didn’t pay off enough."
"Two retailers of makeup geared to teens, on the other hand, voluntarily pulled their products from their shelves after a parent paid to have the products tested and found that eye shadows and face powder contained traces of asbestos, which causes cancer.
Why the difference? Companies that make or sell beauty and personal care products can choose how to respond to consumer complaints, lawsuits, and government warnings -- something lawmakers in Congress are hoping to change.
“There is no other class of products so widely used in the United States with so little regulation,” wrote Sens. Dianne Feinstein (D-California) and Susan Collins (R-Maine) in an article published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) on Tuesday.
The FDA, which regulates drugs and food, is hamstrung when it comes to products like dietary supplements and cosmetics, a $62 billion industry. The agency can send warning letters and inspect manufacturing and distribution facilities. But it does not have the authority to recall products. The retailers and manufacturers can decide what they want to do."
"The pressure on the final five designers was high enough given the high level of competition this late in the game — all of them had won at least one design challenge up to this point. But this week they also had to impress guest judge Nina Garcia, the fashion director for Marie Claire magazine and a regular judge in the original “Project Runway” series.
Garcia and fellow guest Kelly Osbourne joined the regular panelists Georgina Chapman, Isaac Mizrahi and host Alyssa Milano to evaluate the designs.
Going into Thursday night’s episode Stanley had won three design challenges, more than any other contestant up to that point, and he was the front-runner to win the season according to the latest predictions of Gold Derby users who entered their picks in our predictions center. Edmond and Ken had only won one challenge apiece, so our users thought they were at greatest risk of elimination. Were we right?
There are three high scores and two low scores in this week’s challenge. Stanley is safe with scores that put him through to the next round. The challenge winner is Ken, which means Fabio is the runner-up. This is Ken’s second win of the season and his first solo victory. Well deserved!"
"Alyssa appears from backstage dressed in a cute green dress that looks great on her. All five designers gasp and agree that the host is rocking her look — props to her stylist (and my prayers, TBH). She asks the designers to explain their experience on All Stars, and Anthony sums it up for all of them, saying, “Project Runway is where you find out who you are as a designer, and Project Runway All Stars is where you show who you are as a designer.” Amen, an answer fit for a future All Stars winner.
Alyssa then welcomes a Project Runway OG, and personal hero, Nina Garcia. The designers feel her presence even before she steps on the runway. She’s known for her keen eye and straightforward advice, so I know the designers are going to step it up for Nina.
Nina delivers an eloquent li’l speech about gaming and fashion, and Alyssa tells the designers that this week, All Stars is teaming up with Candy Crush — yes, the addictve game app — for the challenge. Yonna Ingolf, a designer for Candy Crush, talks about the worlds of the game, and Nina reveals that the challenge is to create resort looks inspired by a land within that world. The budget is $200, and of course they have one day. Yonna reveals that the winning designer will also have the chance to collaborate with King, the company behind the app, for an exclusive fashion design. I’m not sure what the point of that award is, but go off.
The designers head to the workroom for some competition. They must play one level of Candy Crush, and the person with the highest score gets to choose their inspiration land first. Ken beats everyone and picks Brûlée Bay (beach resort wear) as his inspiration. Fabio goes for Taffy Tropics (tropical resort), Stanley gets Lemonade Lake (lakeside resort), Anthony picks Sticky Savannah (safari resort), and last but absolutely least, Edmond gets stuck with Marshmallow Mountain (mountain resort?). The five designers get to sketching and then head straight to Mood to hunt for fabrics."

"Description:
Sister Wiccas gather around.
By our power we are bound.
Hand in hand and heart to heart,
force all evil to depart!
Paige Matthews is new to the whole "Power of Three" thing, and looking to explore her powers. So when she reads of a Wiccan convention taking place just outside of Las Vegas, she thinks it's a great opportunity for her and for her sisters to learn more about their witchy ways. Though the girls are all over saving innocents they aren't that heavy into Wicca practices, and Paige thinks the retreat could be enlightening.
Piper and Phoebe, however, aren't so sure. They're certain that while they spend their days battling honest-to-badness black magic, their so-called supernatural sisters will be nothing more than a bunch of blessed wanna-bes. Sppm. though, they hear of a rash of murders committed against practicing Wiccans, and making an appearance at the convention becomes top priority.
But as they head for the desert campgrounds, are the Charmed Ones headed straight for disaster? "
"Tallahassee’s mayor is one of three Democratic candidates for governor in 2018 to be featured at the Thursday reception; Stacey Abrams of Georgia and David Garcia of Arizona are joining the event, which will also benefit Gillum’s associated PAC, Forward Florida. The three candidates also recently appeared at a forum where they received an endorsement from the ultra-liberal group People for the American Way.
Republicans control each of the three states, but a change in demographics gives Democrats hope they will become competitive in 2018.
Among those on the blockbuster host committee include actors Alec Baldwin, Alyssa Milano and Rashida Jones, Democratic consultant Van Jones, as well as producers Norman Lear (founder of People for the American Way), Susan Harris and Paul Junger Witt, who have been longtime Democratic supporters.
According to the invite, tickets the event start at $250 for “young progressives,” $500 for supporters and $1,000 for “friend.” A co-host spot is $5,000, and $10,000 to co-chair.
The backing of West Coast Democratic elite will serve as a big boost to Gillum, who faces former Tallahassee Congresswoman Gwen Graham, Winter Park businessman Chris King and former Miami Beach Mayor Phil Levine in the race for the Democratic nomination for Florida governor."
"“Rock Your Face Off” challenged the designers to create performance looks fit for a music superstar. So where “Posen on the Red Carpet” last week demanded Oscar-caliber chic, this challenge required edgy Grammy glam. It’s too bad Lady Gaga wasn’t present as a guest judge given her history of wearing famously provocative dresses made of meat and Kermit the Frog dolls — though in that case she might be a better fit for an unconventional materials challenge.
Instead the designers were judges by special guest Olivia Culpo, who won Miss Universe in 2012 representing the United States, along with the show’s usual panelists Georgina Chapman, Isaac Mizrahi and host Alyssa Milano. Joshua McKinley was eliminated in “Posen,” sparing the other two low-scoring designers last week, Laurence and Newton. That means they especially had something to prove to the judges this week — especially Newton who had gotten low scores in four of the five previous challenges.
But according to the combined predictions of Gold Derby users who have entered their picks for this week’s “Runway,” Laurence was the likeliest to be sent packing with 6/5 odds. Were we right, or did he live to design another day? That means we have an all-male top five. That’s pretty shocking since the women outnumbered the men at the beginning of the season nine-to-seven."
"Alyssa explains to the designers that Project Runway has never messed with “performance wear” and then reveals this week’s challenge: Design a dazzling performance outfit for the stage. Finally, something exciting? The designers must pick a song (more like a melody?) from an iconic jukebox to find out what genre of music they’ll be designing for.
Turns out this is also a face-off challenge as there are two designers to each music genre. Well played, PRAS. The face-offs are as follows:
Pop: Anthony vs. Ken
Country: Helen vs. Fabio
Rock: Edmond vs. Stanley
The winning designer will also create a new Hard Rock T-shirt to be sold at all locations, plus a four-day stay at Hard Rock Hotel Cancun in Mexico. The designers seem to be more excited about the trip than anything else. “I’m gonna sit on the beach and have a cocktail,” Ken hopefully says during his confessional. Let the cut-throat competition for four days at the beach begin!
The designers sketch and head off to Mood for some stage-worthy fabrics. Back in the workroom, everyone sort of pairs off by music genres. Helen is busy at work on her “fun and flirty” country design, which translates to sequins. Fabio tells her that he was thinking of doing sequins, too… awkward.
“I’m not trying to be a mean b— or anything, but I wanna win,” Helen says about going head-to-head with Fabio. That’s the attitude I’ve been yearning for from this girl."
"Dear Elizabella,
I wanted to take this opportunity to tell you how much I love you and to thank you for inspiring me every single day to be the best mommy—and the best person—I can possibly be. I want you to understand just how deeply you’ve impacted not only my life, but also the lives of millions of women across the world. And you’re only three years old.
The past year has been incredibly challenging. Donald Trump is our president (crazy, I know) and he has created a culture of crisis. We are fighting on multiple fronts to protect our rights, and to topple those systems in place that protect and promote bigotry and discrimination.
You, my sweet Bella, are one of the reasons I’m deeply engaged in this fight and am committed to changing the status quo.
For several months now, women everywhere have been sharing their stories of sexual harassment and assault, and saying phrases like “me too” and “time’s up.” I don’t expect you to comprehend this now, because you’re still a baby, but one day you will read about this powerful movement and I want you to know the role you played in it.
One night, when I was lying in bed next to you, I looked down at your sweet, innocent face and I got really scared. I thought about all the ways girls and women are mistreated, and I got scared for you; I don’t ever want you to experience discrimination or abuse, not for one nanosecond of your precious life.
In that moment, I sent out a tweet asking women to stand in solidarity and share their experiences with sexual assault and harassment.
A lot of people replied. Now, women all over the world are speaking up and standing up —not just to the individuals who perpetrate this abuse, but also to the culture that has enabled it for so long. (My tweet helped amplify the work of the Me Too movement, which supports survivors of sexual violence). We are collectively shattering the stigma around this issue and are having much-needed conversations on how we can end the systemic cycle of discrimination against women.
As a result, we are seeing positive, sweeping changes: the media is increasingly covering these issues, men in power are being held accountable for their actions, and legislation to prevent and respond to sexual harassment in Congress has even been introduced.
In a way, all of this is because of you, because you gave mama the strength to speak out. Sexual assault and harassment can be very difficult to talk about, which is why many women—like your mommy—choose not to share such personal, traumatizing stories."
"Description:
In Safe at Home, Alyssa Milano—actress, blogger, and the mind behind the bestselling Touch sports-clothing line—tells the story about her lifelong obsession with baseball, revealing what the game has meant to her and why everyone should take a chance on nine innings. Her baseball story begins in Brooklyn, New York, where her father scorned the Dodgers for abandoning his beloved city.
When he and his young daughter later moved out west for a fledgling TV show called Who's the Boss?, Alyssa learned one of the fundamental truths of the game: No matter where you are, no matter how old you are, baseball connects you to your past.
From arguing about the importance of baseball history to criticizing Major League Baseball's response to the steroid scandal, Alyssa brings an intelligent, wry, and entertaining female voice to the world of baseball writing. The end result is a unique and unexpected book that is equal parts memoir, manifesto, and love letter to America's game."
